Trump Administration Escalates Federal Shake-Up: Budget Cuts, Layoffs, and National Guard Redeployment Spark Debate

With budget cuts and personnel changes, the Trump administration is still changing the federal landscape.

With fresh information on large cuts and staffing changes today, the Trump administration is still making a strong effort to reorganize federal agencies and spending priorities. While some suggested cutbacks, such a $400 million cut to PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), received strong opposition and were apparently deleted, the Senate has adopted a package with billions in rescissions, foreshadowing a deep dig into federal budgets.

This action comes after earlier this week's news that the Supreme Court had given the administration permission to start dismantling the Department of Education, which might result in the dismissal of about 1,400 workers. –Supporters contend that these measures are essential to simplifying government operations and cutting unnecessary spending, while others contend that they are part of a deliberate attempt to limit government spending and reach.

Governor Newsom and other local authorities have previously described the administration's decision to withdraw 2,000 California National Guard men from their federal mission in Los Angeles as politically motivated. These internal changes highlight a larger plan to establish presidential authority over the distribution of federal resources and other federal functions.

A significant feature of the contemporary political environment in the United States is the continued emphasis on these internal policy reforms, as the government uses its power to carry out its agenda in a number of areas, from border management and military to social services and education.
